Where does the produce go?
How does the garden work?
Proviso Partners for Health, a community coalition, connected the Proviso East High School Wellness Committee to form the Giving Garden. A group of student interns run the garden under the leadership of Ms. Marcia LaPorte, where they have an opportunity to learn about urban agriculture and food access, as well as gaining valuable life skills. The garden will also provide experience in running a business when it starts selling produce to the PEHS community, including the PEHS cafeteria.
Why Does this Matter?
Food security is defined as "access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life" (USDA, n.d.), and as a result of food deserts and inadequate funding, is a challenge faced by many low-income and African American communities around the country. Urban agriculture addresses this issue from the ground up, directly involving the community in reconnecting to healthy and sustainable food source, while improving the local environment and eventually decreasing poverty.
Resources: why the proviso township? and what is pp4h?
"Proviso Partners for Health (PP4H) is a multi-sector coalition to support community health and address health equity. Partners from businesses, daycare centers, schools, health care systems, and social service organizations work collaboratively to implement policy, systems, and environmental change strategies. We envision a community that encourages and supports healthy eating and active living where we live, work and play."
- www.provisopartners.com/ "PP4H uses health improvement tools and methods to support healthy living in the Proviso Township. In addition to healthy living and and access to healthy foods, a long term aim is economic development and job creation through initiatives. Proviso Township contains about 150,000 people, and is approximately 10 miles west of city-center Chicago with three high schools. The area is segregated by wealth and other social determinants of health. At one of the largest high schools in the Township, the amount spent per student is the least of all the communities in the area. This neighborhood also includes unemployment rates at an all-time high, graduation rates that are below 40 and an obesity rate that is twice the national average. Nevertheless, there are a wealth of assets in our community and the coalition has helped bridge the gap between the hospital, schools, and the community to build partnerships in order to leverage existing assets and resources." -insight.livestories.com/s/v2/pp4h-healthy-food-access-and-economic-development/b79633cf-b624-4080-9c6c-e78d3637b65e/ |
